The best way to get rid of cat pee smell in carpet takes several steps and some patience. If you rush to clean the spot and try every cleaner in your cabinet, then you will more than likely set the stain, and the smell forever.  These steps and products will not just get rid of the smell, it will actually breakdown the urine and get the cat urine out of the carpet.

Hint: F.O.N is one of the the bests product to remove cat urine. You can buy it online at Amazon.

If you are not sure where the smell is coming from you need to use a black light to detect the cat urine. Turn off all the lights in the room, or better yet wait until dark, and then shine the black light over the floor or other areas you suspect might have cat urine or spray on it. The urine will glow and be obvious under a black light.

Also, you can use this method after cleaning to see that you have indeed removed all the cat pee. The spot will no longer glow under the black light.

Blot the Cat Pee Spot on the Carpet

If the spot is still wet, soak up as much of it as you can by blotting. Do not rub. You can use old rags, paper towels, or newspaper.

If you want, you put some water on the spot to help with blotting, but do not use any cleaners or even vinegar.

– one of the best on the market. Once you have blotted the spot, pour the FON over the spot saturating it. The bottle says to spray – that’s not enough. I pour and soak the spot.

F.O.N is not readily available in pet stores, but you can buy it online at Amazon. Buy the largest bottle – it’s worth it.

Soak Up the FON Cat Urine Enzyme Cleaner

The FON needs to sit on the spot for as long as possible. Put a layer of old towels and/or newspaper on the now soaked spot. On top of that, put something heavy that you don’t mind getting wet. Old books or wood blocks work well. Let this sit for several days (I said this takes patience!).

After a few days, remove the towels etc and let the spot air dry.

Once the spot is completely dry, it’s now up to you how you want to clean it. The urine is gone if you followed these instructions – check with your black light. But the area may have a mild smell of the FON. You can now use soapy water or other carpet cleaner to remove the FON smell.

Do Not Use Carpet Cleaners or Vinegar Before Using the F.O.N.!

If you use any carpet cleaners, soap, or vinegar on the cat urine on your carpet, the Feline Odor Neutralizer will not work! In fact, no cat enzyme cleaner will work now. By using soap or vinegar, you add to the urine and may even change the urine so that the enzyme product cannot break the urine down.

Warning – Your Carpet May Stain – Actually it Probably Will

The spot you cleaned will now probably be lighter than the rest of the carpet. This is not very noticeable on white or light colored carpets, but you will see it on dark colored carpets. It will be a shade or two lighter. This color change started happening as soon as your cat’s acidic urine hit the carpet. So even though you will probably have a permanent stain after saturating the area with F.O.N., removing the cat urine is more important and pleasant than leaving it.

Cats like a clean litter box! Not scooping it daily may lead to cats urinating outside the litter box. A robot litter box can do the cleaning for you and make living with your cat easier.

Another good option to cleaning cat and dog urine is XO cleaner, also available on Amazon.
